OverviewPatients referred to the Mid-America Sarcoma Institute are typically seen within a very short period of time. We understand the concerns and worries that a patient with a possible diagnosis of cancer has in the course of their life. We strife to keep you and your physician informed as to every aspect of your care. Prior to being seen, the patient will commonly receive by mail or fax, information about the Institute, about Menorah Medical Center (the hospital in which the Institute is housed), and about the upcoming visit. Additionally, medical history forms (available on this website) should be filled out and mailed back or brought with you. Upon your visit, you will be registered into the Sarcoma Institute computer system which will also automatically register you for any lab test, x-ray or radiology test, and all other facilities of the Menorah Medical Center. The association of the Mid-America Sarcoma Institute and Menorah Medical Center does necessitate an additional nominal fee (most commonly covered by insurance). This association allows access to all studies deemed appropriate for your care, in one location, provided typically on the same day of your visit. At the first visit, you will meet with the physician, a clinical nurse specialist, and a nurse navigator. The physician will perform a physical exam and review and order appropriate tests. If you have had x-rays performed prior to your presentation, we ask that you bring them with you. A plan of action will be discussed with you and your family. The Clinical Nurse Specialist will then review and expound upon the diagnosis and plan. The nurse navigator will outline and schedule the necessary tests as well as schedule surgery if needed. Surgery is most commonly performed within a very short period of time following the first visit. The dedicated Sarcoma In-Patient area in Menorah Medical Center is staffed by nurses and physical therapists who are trained in the treatment of sarcoma patients and their associated reconstructions. Prior to your hospitalization, these members of the team have already met in conference and discussed and prepared all aspects of your care. The team approach to sarcoma treatment does have a positive effect on your overall care. Discharge planning is done at bedside as well as the plan for follow-up. Appointments with other members of the Sarcoma Team including Radiation Oncologists and Medical Oncologists are made in a very timely fashion. The entire Sarcoma Team then meets to discuss and outline a plan of action for your long term needs as well. We believe that by keeping the patient informed and educated to their treatment, provides for an improved outcome in your health. |
