Taking care of yourself during treatment

When you have been diagnosed with cancer, your health is more important that ever.  Avoiding infection and eating right can help you maintain your strength, and help you cope with possible side effects of your treatment.

You can also prepare yourself for side effects that may be common with your treatment.  Be sure to ask your healthcare team what symptoms you should be aware of, and discuss strategies for staying healthy throughout your therapy.

Here are a few simple suggestions to help you maintain your health during many chemotherapy regimens:

            •           Wash your hands often

            •           Avoid people who have coughs, colds or other symptoms of illness

            •           Switch to an electric razor

            •           Use a soft-bristle toothbrush

  • Discuss with your healthcare provider participation in contact sports or other activities that can possibly lead to injury
  • Check with your healthcare provider before taking any over the counter products
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Get lots of rest
  • Talk to the doctor and/or nurse during and after therapy
  • Immediately notify the doctor of:

            >Any fever over 101° F (38.5° C)

            >A cough or sore throat, even without a fever

            >A wound that does not heal or appears infected

            >Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
